Fall is Best for Planting Success!

Posted 11.10.16

Greetings!

As the year winds down and the seasons begin to change, I encourage you to take a moment and think about what your outdoor spaces mean to you.  Not just how they look, but how they add to your day.  Maybe it is that spot on your back patio you visit after a hectic day, or the familiar tree you always pull up to on your way home.  Whatever it is, go outside and enjoy it.  Build a fire this evening, take your kids outside and let their creativity and imagination develop, spend time with your family and loved ones and enjoy an afternoon outside…You won’t be mad you did!  Our outdoor spaces keep us healthy, recharged, and inspired.

We get excited here at Lawn Wrangler about being outdoors and the spaces we get to create, and are thankful to have customers like you that let us do this every day!  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be your landscape professional this year.  I hope we have followed through on providing great service, and an easy and pleasant experience, while working with you to meet your landscape needs.  We are here to help with whatever you may need.  Whether it’s adding an outdoor living area, or enhancing a small space in the yard, our team can bring it to life.   Thanks again and I look forward to keeping your lawn and landscape at its best!

Best Wishes,

Jon Vander Vliet

Change is in the Air

There’s no doubt about it…fall is here! Leaves are changing color, temperatures are cooler, and we’re all spending more time indoors now that the summer season is behind us.   Looking back over the past year, how satisfied were you with your landscape? In terms of both looks and functionality, are there any changes you’d like to make? This time of year is perfect for reviewing what works and what doesn’t on your property.

With landscape renovations, you can improve your property’s curb appeal and resale value. Not to mention, you can make the outdoor portion of your property more inviting to visitors.

There are plenty of possibilities depending on your specific needs and budget. For example, consider:

  • Planting new trees, shrubs or ornamental grasses
  • Installing flower bedsfire-pit-image
  • Creating screens out of tall-growing plant varieties
  • Adding landscape lighting
  • Building a new deck or paver patio
  • Installing a new pathway or walkway
  • Adding a water feature such as a fountain or pond
  • Installing a fire pit or outdoor kitchen

Any of these suggestions can help to improve your property. Just be sure not to jump into any new projects without planning carefully beforehand. By sticking to a plan, you can complete parts of your landscape in stages (or over several years) according to your available time and money. Knowing what you want to accomplish will help you get there much more efficiently!

Trees and Shrubs Installed in Fall Have a Head Start

Do you have the perfect spot in mind for a new tree or grouping of shrubs? Maybe you lost a plant, or some of your older shrubs need to be replaced because they’ve become overgrown. If you’re in a newer building, chances are there are still some parts of your master landscape plan to be installed. Does your landscape need a face-lift before you put your property up for sale?

Whatever your situation, if you’re planning to install trees or shrubs, fall is a great time to do it. The cooler weather and more plentiful moisture give landscape plants a chance to put out roots and get used to their new home before the stress of next summer’s heat and dryness is upon them. They will have an extra growing season to become established, and you’ll have the pleasure of seeing your new trees and shrubs bloom or leaf out next spring.

In selecting plants as additions or replacements for landscapes, we keep these points in mind:

  • It’s important to account for the plants’ eventual, mature size, and give them enough room to grow. It’s a common mistake to space plants based on their size when planted. This can lead to the need for severe pruning or elimination of plants when they begin to approach full size.
  • It’s best to plant in odd-numbered (1, 3, 5, 7) rather than even numbered groups for the most pleasing effect.
  • Large trees and any that are top heavy should be staked so that they lean 1 or 2 degrees into the prevailing winds.

Mark received his bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from Clemson University and completed his first professional year

of Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia in Athens.  Mark says “one thing I’ve learned over my years in the industry is that products and techniques may change, but each homeowner has a unique vision for their yard.”  Whether it’s a low maintenance foundation planting with some lighting, a large perennial flower border with ornamental grass or a signature hardscape like an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, he can work with you to develop your vision for your yard and bring that vision to reality.

He looks forward to working with you to help you get the most from your outdoor living space!
